The computer automatically adjusts its injector pulse to help regulate the amount of fuel that gets sent to the engine. The oxygen sensor then relays the information to the computer and uses it to determine how much fuel is needed. The computer will then set the fuel flow and even other related operating characteristics of the system to maintain the right ratio of air and fuel combination.

This loop goes on and on as the engine runs. This code is very similar to the error code P, some vehicles even show both codes simultaneously. If the reader shows P then that means a lean engine error code has materialized in the system. This lean code is enabled when the computer detects maxed out of enrichment adjustments. First and foremost, start by parking your vehicle on a flat ground and use an emergency brake set.

Thus, make sure you check for sign of cracks or dilapidation throughout the vacuum lines.

Of course, make sure you check the integrity of each end of the vacuum hoses. The intake system uses gaskets to seal its components. Damaged gaskets result to vacuum leak, which will show code failure. A carburetor cleaner can help see any potential leaks by simply spraying it around the surface of the gasket. The exhaust system manages both pressure and vacuum cycles the engine runs. To check for vacuum leaks, ask someone to start the engine and hold the idle for you at rpm.

Then, listen for any noises in the exhaust that comes from the system, including head pipes and manifolds. Also, black soot can indicate exhaust leak, so make sure you look for them at any point as well.

After driving for miles, the hot wire filament of mass air flow sensor can be contaminated due to air impurities, which can lead to false readings. Remove these deposits and clean the filament by using a sensor-safe carburetor cleaner and allow the sensor to get the right reading. If the sensor fails, it will give wrong feedback information, which often shows lean mixture code.

When the engine misfires, almost-clean oxygen charge is sent to the exhaust system. This however, can be easily fixed through tune-up. The air intake boot transports engine air from the MAF sensor up to the throttle accelerator. If it fails, it will show false reading to the mass air flow sensor tool code.

Cleaning the MAF sensor can usually solve this problem. The best way to clean it is to take it off and clean it using a brake cleaner or electronic cleaner.Step 1 - Once a check engine or service engine soon light has determined a lean engine code has materialized, a repair procedure inspection is needed.

Explanation: A lean code is enabled when the computer has detected enrichment adjustments have maxed out, with no results, this inability triggers the lean code. Lean Mixture Code Step 2 - Un-metered air which enters the intake system of the engine can cause a lean mixture code to be triggered, inspect all vacuum lines for cracks or dilapidation. Check the integrity of vacuum hoses at each end of the hose.

Vacuum Leak Step 3 - The intake system utilizes gaskets which seal various components, if these gaskets fail a vacuum leak will result, causing the code failure.

Use carburetor cleaner to help locate any potential leaks by spraying around gasket surfaces and observe a rise in engine idle speed if a leak exists. Vacuum Leak Testing Step 4 - An exhaust leak will allow fresh air to enter the system on the negative pressure side of an exhaust event, this will cause an oxygen sensor to produce a lean reading.

An exhaust system manages both pressure and vacuum cycles while an engine runs. To inspect for an exhaust leak, have a helper start the engine and hold the idle at about rpm, listen for additional exhaust noises coming from the system including manifolds and head pipes.

Also, look for black soot at any point in the system as this can indicate an exhaust leak.

Exhaust leak Step 5 - After miles of driving, the mass air flow sensor's filament or hot wire, can become contaminated due air impurities which create false readings.

Using sensor safe carburetor cleaner to clean this filament can sometimes remove these deposits allowing the sensor to obtain a correct reading.

If the sensing element fails, feedback information will be incorrect causing a lean mixture code. Oxygen Sensor Step 7 - When an engine misfires an almost clean charge of oxygen is released into the exhaust system.

This will cause the exhaust system to test lean as tested by the O2 sensors, this can sometimes be fixed by a tune up. Spark Plug Step 8 - An air intake boot transfers engine air from the mass air flow sensor to the throttle actuator.

If the boot fails, it can cause a false reading from the mass air flow sensor producing the code. Air Intake Boot Replacement After repairs are completed, clear the trouble codes and allow the computer monitors to reset by driving between 20 and 40 miles to confirm correct system functionality. Common Misconception: When an engine misfires, the cylinder runs lean, not rich, this is because the air to fuel ratio favors air by 14x. Therefore, an engine must be running properly without cylinder misfires to avoid lean mixture codes.

Optimum air to fuel mixture 14 to 1 is called stoichiometricwhich means: chemically balanced. The engine fuel management system is controlled by the computer and various sensors which feedback data. Oxygen Sensor. Spark Plug. Air Intake Boot Replacement. Ask a Car Question. It's Free!Toyota Highlander was having fuel issues so replaced pump, regulator and strainer, had to buy original Toyota pump since we tied to others and didn't work and gave codes p and p it's having trouble starting so we cleaned the MAF sensor and engine started immediately but when turned off again it takes a couple seconds to start but the car runs smooth and very strong but fuel efficiency doesn't seem so good and codes haven't returned in one day so should I just replace the MAF sensor??

All this started at the same time my alternator went bad and apparently gave an overcharge and messed up my headlight and two tail lights and my car rattled so someone very experienced told me it was the fuel pump didn't have enough pressure and the car does not rattle anymore but just has a bit trouble starting for a few seconds. Several things may cause code P and P to be triggered.

As the codes indicate, there is a lean fuel condition present, which may be caused by a lack of fuel supply or in some cases, a vacuum leak. Other problems such as a faulty fuel pressure regulatora faulty fuel pumpa clogged fuel filterfaulty fuel injectorsfaulty oxygen sensorsor a faulty mass air flow sensor may also cause this to happen.

First is a brief overview of this code. A P Diagnostic trouble code indicates a lean condition on bank one. Bank 2 is simply the other bank. If it is a 4 cylinder engine, there is only one bank. Below is a list of the more common Toyota engines you will see. According to the Manufacture, here are the possible causes for this code.

The customers concern is the check engine light on with a Diagnostic trouble code stored in the computer of P indicating the fuel trims are too high and the engine is running lean.

Based on my experience, this condition can be and usually is but not always associated with a performance or rough running condition. For example, the engine will bog down or hesitate while accelerating or it will stall or surge at lower engine rpms.

However, this is not always the case. The problem may be on a much smaller scale where the computer on the Toyota Corolla can compensate for the lean condition and the driver may never feel a hiccup while driving.

I will go over some of the more common ones I have seen on a Toyota Corolla and even the Toyota Matix as they use the same 4 cylinder engine. First, I want to say this is a very common fault code on this engine. However, there three common causes for this lean condition and P code and I will go over each of them in detail. The MAF or Mass air flow sensor measures the amount of air coming into the engine. This measurement must be precise so that the computer can match up the amount of fuel with the amount of air coming into the engine.Sign In with Edmunds.

Just last week, I purchased a used, Highlander Limited model. I drove it for the first few days without any problems, but today the check engine light and vsc lights went on. I've read a few articles online that mention cleaning the MAF sensor?

Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions? I am a "computer guy" and not a mechanic at all I'm not afraid, however, to try to troubleshoot problems on my own as long as I can find good resources online ex? Any suggestions? If I do need to take this to a mechanic, can I still drive the vehicle for a bit or could that really mess up my vehicle? Howdy, Stranger! It looks like you're new here.

I just threw this code last week. I tried just cleaning the maf while it was still in the airbox as it seems like they torqued those maf screws done to lbft from the factory and one started to strip, but i wasn't able to get it clean enough and it re-threw the code after about 10 miles.

Agencias kolbi multiplaza escazu

I finally got a chance to rip it apart over the weekend. Pulled out the airbox and disconnected the ISR mod from the throttle body. Sprayed the heck out of the maf, really getting down in the tube and getting those 2 wires clean as others have pointed out in some of the other threads in here. Cleaned the butterfly on the throttle body really good also as it had some black gunk built up on it.

Put it all back together and so far so good. Its been about 50 miles now and i've been clear, so anybody that gets this code, start with doing these 2 things first before spending any money on sensors or a new maf.

Just be careful taking those screws out of the maf as I ended up stripping one. Probably should hit the scews with some lube beforehand.
