Hike Siphon Draw to Flatiron Summit

Write a review.Depending on how you approach it, this doubleheader can be either a walk in the park or a gantlet lined with piles of rocks, potential missteps and overambitious hikers on their last legs — the minimal mileage to the top belies the amount of energy it takes to get there. That dichotomy, however, is what makes this one of the great hikes in the Sonoran Desert. In the space between the trailhead and the edge of the precipice, this scenic route ranges from easy to strenuous.

Part 1 of the combo, the Siphon Draw Trail, begins at the end of a paved road in Lost Dutchman State Park, which was developed in as a day-use area by the Bureau of Land Management. It became a state park on December 5, The first steps are the easiest as the well-marked path winds through the park and past the park campground. The other extreme becomes the norm later on. Meanwhile, the trail continues its casual zigzag past saguaros, chollas and creosote bushes. In March, wildflowers are part of the landscape, too — the intensity depends on how much rain falls on the desert the previous winter.

At the very least, you can expect to see yellow waves of brittlebush. About 15 minutes in, the trail crosses from the park into the Tonto National Forest. Continuing on, the trail quickly arrives at the Superstition Wilderness, which cradlesacres, including all of those from this point forward.

The line is invisible, but the wilderness boundary is where the wide, easy-to-follow path starts giving way to a narrow, rugged trail that will have you rock-hopping the rest of the day. And farther on, the Flatiron. It looks like Mother Nature installed an Olympic-sized halfpipe at the foot of the mountain. Be careful as you make your way to the saddle at the upper end elevation: 3, feet. This is the turnaround point for Part 1, the Siphon Draw Trail.

The rest of the route, Part 2, is the grueling, rock-infested climb to the Flatiron. The gantlet. The first challenge is getting over the saddle — some minor technical prowess comes in handy. After that, route-finding and conditioning will be your biggest concerns. From the saddle, make your way to the riparian wash on the right. When in doubt, remember: Left is right. Length: 4. Proceed to the entrance gate, then follow the signs to the Siphon Draw Trailhead.

The subsequent push upward from the depths of this crater-like formation, combined with other forces of nature, created a wilderness 40 minutes east Phoenix that is just loaded with miles of beautiful trail, unique geological features, and rich human history to boot. One of the most popular hikes in the Superstitions begins at the Peralta Trailhead and climbs roughly 1, feet to Fremont Saddle. When looking for best Superstition Mountains hiking trails, Peralta trailhead is often at the top of the list due to its stunning views and accessibility to all abilities.

The Siphon Draw trail gains 2, feet over 3 miles before it reaches the top of Flat Iron gulp. Of all the Superstition Mountains hiking trails, Flat Iron can be the most demanding in the shortest distance, but also the most rewarding.

Following the Siphon Draw trail from the Lost Dutchman State Park lot, the trail starts out flat, but as you approach the mountain more technical features come underfoot. The Siphon Draw itself is just about a mile in and can be extremely slick, especially during wet conditions. The ensuing trail can trick hikers into a steep and loose scramble on the right side, so beware of this and remember to stay left and follow cairns.

Just before the top you face a foot vertical section, but with care and maybe a hand from a fellow hiker, you can find a safe way to the most spectacular views overlooking all of the East Valley.

This trail is perfect for day hikers, as some of the best views are within the first 3 miles! Battleship mountain may be named for its resemblance to an ocean vessel, but the climb can be described as a battle of its own. This hike is for those looking to test their comfort with heights, wayfinding skills, and sheer physical ability. With a round-trip distance just shy of 12 miles and an elevation gain of about 1, feet this trip requires an early start — especially in the warmer late spring and summer months.

Beginning at the First Water trailhead, you will connect to the Second Water trail and then follow the Boulder Canyon Wash Southeast before splitting off to tackle the Battleship Mountain scramble. From here it is a series of cairn finding exercises to guide you to some of the most impressive degree views in the Superstition Wilderness. This 2. This well traveled path is a mild hike that allows you to spend more time socializing and less time sucking wind.

This 24 mile out-and-back features a modest elevation gain of 3, feet and is best done as an overnight backpacking trip. In fact, many people choose this to be their first exposure to backpacking in the Superstition Mountains due to the well-marked and maintained trail.

While the trail splits on the way to Reavis Falls and Frog Tanks Trail, the destination along Reavis Ranch Trail is actually an old Ranch site, once inhabited by farmer, horse packer, and miner, Elisha Reavis himself. This historic site has reminders of the old west with grave sites, native ruins, and farming equipment along the way, making the Reavis Ranch trail one of the best well-rounded hikes in the Superstitions. You will see Hoodoo rock formations, a slick rock basin with possible waterfall, which provides a great workout and awesome photography. Flatiron is one of the most popular day hikes in the Superstition Wilderness, just outside of Phoenix, AZ. Once inside the park, drive to the last parking area and look for a sign for the Siphon Draw Trailhead.

Flatiron Peak / Lost Dutchman State Park / Siphon Draw Trail

The Siphon Draw Trail is clearly marked and easy to follow for the first few miles as you begin a gradual ascent to the basin, which sits at 3, ft.

The slide rock basin is a common stopping point, as the next mile to the top of the Flatiron is not maintained by the park and involves a bit of boulder scrambling, including a foot vertical climb at the very top.

Although the end of the trail is technically unmaintained, its popularity makes it easy enough to follow. When in doubt, just look around for white markings on the rock or cairns. Once you reach the top, you have two options: turn right to reach the popular Flatiron Summit, or take the road less traveled and continue straight up to Superstition Peak The Flatiron Summit lookout point offers amazing views of the Apache Junction Valley, and is a perfect spot to take a snack break.

This route is a bit tricky to follow, as you will be hiking through overgrown cacti and brush, but also provides unique views as it weaves in and out of Hoodoo rock formations. After bushwhacking your way through a bit of desert brush, you will be rewarded by incredible degree views from the top of Superstition Peak, including a great view of the iconic Weavers Needle.

Be sure to bring a camera, as the photography opportunities at the top are spectacular! Whether you turn around at the rock basin, make it to the Flatiron Summit, or venture all the way to the top of Superstition Peak, you will not be disappointed by the ever changing rock formations, beautiful views, and rigorous workout!

The hike up to Siphon Draw slowly gains elevation but is quite mild. The waterfall in Siphon Draw is often running in the cooler months and is a perfect spot for a snack and a photo opp before beginning the climb to the top. The rocks are quite slick in this area and the incline gets very steep. From this point on it's all uphill climbing and boulder hopping.

Be sure to get an early start because you don't want to be coming down this in the dark. Once you reach the top the views of the valley are incredible. This is by far the best hike in the city!

When in doubt stick to the left. I definitely got off trail and scrambled up some loose rock. Stick to what looks like a water runoff when approaching the summit. Flatiron is awesome to say the least. Quite a steep and long climb but worth every step.

Usually a lot of people there so go early or on a weekday if you want some quiet time. Always practice Leave No Trace ethics on your adventures and follow local regulations. Please explore responsibly!
